Brazil’s Mateus Isaac and Venezuelan Carenys Salazar are the 2019 ISO IFCA South American Slalom Championship champions crowned in Palhoça.

Brazilian Mateus Isaac and Venezuelan Carenys Salazar won the 2019 ISSO IFCA South American Slalom Championship titles, the largest windsurfing event in the Americas that ended on Sunday in Palhoça Santa Catarina. For two days, more than 30 sailors from four countries competed in eliminations with winds above 20 knots on the Ponta do Papagaio beach.

Forecasts for Sunday were confirmed and the incoming South wind accompanied with threatening dark clouds blowing strongly at 11am, leaving the course area stirred with small waves. The race committee stepped in and set up a shorter but closer course towards the beach, which allowed the public to feel the thrill of the cruising athletes.

Favorite to the title, the paulista Mateus Isaac returned to win all the heats to earn the title. The Brazilian occupies the ninth position in the slalom world ranking.

Second in the overall classification, Santa Catarina Wilhelm Schurmann was the champion of the Master division, for sailors over 40 years. However, on the streak, Schurmann’s dispute was with Peruvian Alessio Botteri, 21, and Ceará Mathias Pinheiro, in the fight for second place overall, behind Isaac. Schurmann showed that he still has much to give to the sport.

In the women, Venezuelan Carenys Salazar won the South American double championship. Isla Margarita sailor had already been champion in 2016 in Aruba And was unbeatable in Ponta do Papagaio.

“It was very good. To tell the truth I thought it would be much harder,” Carenys said. Second place went to Brazilian Bruna Martinelli, while Peruvian Maria Belen Bazo ended up having problems with equipment and was surpassed by Brazilian Giovanna Prada, who was in third place.


In the Youth division, the victory went to Rio Grande do Sul Guilherme Plentz. ISSO sailor Wind Xtreme was threatened by Peruvian Raul Claux, but the title was secured after the last two finals of the sixth series were canceled due to lack of wind. In the Grand Master division, for sailors over 50, Murilo Carioni, sixth overall, took the title.

At the awards ceremony, IFCA President Rubén Pretrisie thanked the organization and the athletes for their commitment. “We had a lot of action, even crashes, a lot of sailors broke their gear, but it was a great event. I’m happy to have come to Brazil to attend the event. Thanks to the competitors for coming and I’m sure we’ll be back and do more international races. in Brazil, “he said.

The event host, Renato Hadlich of Isso Wind Xtreme, also thanked the community for their involvement and cited the work done by the students of the Tourism course at Palhoça Municipal College as an example of a partnership that made the event successful.

Representing the Executive Branch, Palhoça Deputy Mayor Amaro Júnior highlighted the municipality’s intention to host a new competition to integrate the city’s calendar of events. Still in the morning, the Palhoça Least Garbage project promoted a task force for cleaning microlins on Ponta do Papagaio beach and separated the garbage produced in the event to be destined to a project partnership association.
