Magnificent Almanarre provided a 5 day action-packed World Championship event from 17th to 22nd April.
The Hyeres Windsurf Organization not only provided great service and hospitality but also accomplished the 2017 IFCA Youth and Masters Slalom World Championships with great success.
A total of 170 competitors from 20 countries competed in 5 long, action packed, days with a total of 54 races on the first day, 87 on the second, 54 on day 3, 99 on the fourth and 90 on day 5. A total of 384 heats sailed and with only 38 protests! “A World Record” The impossible was made possible in co-operation with IFCA officials and the entire hard working Event team – “two thumbs up”.
It was great to see new young faces with a lot of potential during this year’s championships and also returning competitors from previous IFCA events. The tricky conditions during that week made it difficult for some of the competitors with lots of sail size changes during the day. Sometimes the wind just kept increasing from 13 to 35+ knots on some of the days and here the Class Rule limiting competitors to 2 boards/4 sails made an impact on some of the competitors. In the day 2 Video Report you can listen to what the runner-up in the Master World Championship division has to say about that…WATCH
The 2017 IFCA Masters World Champion is Andrea Rosati from Italy, one competitor with a smart set of equipment registered, a few perfect starts, some slick sailing and now a second World title in his pocket. Job well done.
Basile Jacquin, one of the strongest members of the New Caledonia squad, is a known and respected sailor in the Youth Slalom division for a couple of years now. Back in 2016 he managed to claim the European title here in Hyeres Almanarre. Not long ago this became his new base, where he will be attending university along his road towards a professional windsurfing career. This year Basile shone with confidence both on and off the water. The kid was focused and dedicated yet with a smile on his face. WATCH
The Youth Girls division was dominated by the strongest girl member of the New Caledonia squad. She won 5 out of 7 eliminations with a 2nd and a 3rd as discard.
Quotes: ” I feel good with my new gear” and ” I smile when I cross the finish line, especially after I look back to see how far away the other girls are.” With a few European and World titles won and a Game Face pose, this can be no one else but Lilou Granier – simply a strong champion on the rise.
Another talent from New Caledonia Nathan Doom, a skillfull sailor, a young fella with a whole lot of Windfoiling experience. Light and fast is how he moves over the water. Nathan enjoys the thrill of speed on the slalom course. To try is not to fear failure.
Video Report Day 5:
With the IFCA Youths and Masters Slalom worlds completed we cannot wait to find out who will claim the other 2 World titles.
